The Parking Professional Wins Award in Association TRENDS 2010 All-Media Contest
It is with great pleasure to announce that The Parking Professional has been honored with a Bronze Award in the Association TRENDS' 2010 All-Media Contest.
The TRENDS All-Media Contest is an annual competition held exclusively for associations, recognizing the most creative and effective communication vehicles developed in the industry over the prior year. The 2010 competition included more than 470 entries in 27 categories of association communications.
"IPI is delighted to receive this recognition, which honors the many contributions of our talented writers, contributors and designers, along with our managing editor, Henry Wallmeyer," said IPI's Executive Director Shawn Conrad, CAE. "This award is even more special because each advertising dollar invested in The Parking Professional is reinvested in the magazine and other IPI programs that advance the parking profession."
Since its launch in 1985, The Parking Professional has been a trusted resource for individuals in the parking and transportation industry with the latest information regarding parking design, construction, technology, management, innovation and news. The Wall Street Journal has referred to The Parking Professional as "the bible of the parking industry." While it is wonderful to receive recognition, IPI will always strive to provide our members with the tools and resources to increase their knowledge and advance the parking profession.
The Parking Professional will be honored at the 32nd Annual Salute to Association Excellence, February 16, 2011, at the Capital Hilton in Washington, D.C. For more information, read the IPI Press Release.
IPI Announces Pre-Conference Workshops for $99
With more than 40 education sessions geared by track, Shoptalks, PowerPitches, Two Keynotes and Two General Sessions, IPI's 2011 Conference & Expo offers education for everyone involved in the parking industry - from frontline to senior level. IPI's First Observer Training to be Administered at Super Bowl XLV
In preparation for the upcoming Super Bowl being held in Dallas on February 6, more than 1,000 individuals will become certified in the parking-specific, anti-terrorism training program Fist Observer. The program, developed by IPI and the Transportation Security Administration, is entirely funded by the federal government and trains parking professionals to address five critical security areas: on-street, surface parking lots, garages/decks, special events, and shuttle operations. First Observers recognize and report potential threats using a concise, accurate and simple communications process.
More than 2,350 individuals have been certified since the program's inception at the 2010 IPI Conference & Expo. If you would like to have your staff trained at no cost, please visit www.parking.org/firstobserver or contact Henry Wallmeyer, IPI Deputy Director, at 540.371.7535.

Upcoming IPI Webinar: Enforcement
A Paradigm Shift in Parking Enforcement
Wednesday, January 26, 2011
Instructor: Roamy Valera, CAPP, Vice President, Standard Parking Corp.
This webinar will discuss the challenges that are presented to Parking Enforcement Officers (PEO) and the expectation to deliver the highest level of customer service. Public Relations have become much more important in the day-to-day functions of the parking enforcement profession. It will give an overview of the parking industry today, describing how the need of a shift in paradigm for parking enforcement programs has changed the way parking professionals look at the impact of public relations and the services provided. The topic will cover a number of related topics including the role of the parking enforcement officer, how this role interacts with the overall parking initiative and/or program, the "challenges" of the PEO, and more.
You will learn the various tools the industry has at their disposal and how the parking enforcement program with specific objectives such as increasing PEO accountabilities, identifying parking demand and utilization by area/zones, citation productivity, and reducing complaints, needs a solid understanding of how public relations impacts the results of their work.
The webinar will also discuss the issue of technology today and the impact it is having on the parking industry. In addition, the presentation will discuss how established policies and procedures play a role in the delivery of public relations initiatives, and the question of who should be involved, and how it should be adopted and managed.

State of the States
California Public Parking Association
As an organization our goal is to help our member agencies with questions and issues that arise. Recently a member inquired if they had an obligation to provide sign language interpreters for hearing impaired individuals at an administrative hearing. Our members in both San Francisco and Los Angeles said that if a respondent specifically requests a sign language interpreter at their hearing, they provide one. Title II of the ADA "is intended to apply to all programs, activities, and services provided or operated by State and local governments." It appears that if requested, a parking agency may have to provide a sign language interpreter. CPPA does not provide legal advice to our members due to several reasons. However, CPPA members are advised to check with their own attorneys or legal representatives about this issue.
